In 1962, evolutionary biologist E. O. Wilson mapped this rapid dynamic, demonstrating that ants register these molecules through specialized receptor neurons on their antennae. As nearby ants catch the scent, they release the same pheromone in turn. This chemical chain reaction sweeps through the nest, mobilizing tens of thousands of workers within seconds.
Crucially, this alarm is not a blunt, panicked shout. It is a structured code. Modern entomological research shows that ants rarely rely on a single molecule to communicate danger; they release carefully balanced chemical blends. Adjusting the ratio of compounds in the cocktail completely changes the colony’s reaction. The warning delivered in the verse follows an exact, multi-part architecture. It opens not with a solitary scramble to safety, but with an open broadcast: yā ayyuhā al-naml—"O ants." The individual ant addresses the entire community at once, acting as a lookout that coordinates the movement of the whole nest. Early authorities recorded that the speech follows a distinct sequence: a general call to attention, an immediate physical command (udkhulū masākinakum—"enter your dwellings"), and the identification of the approaching danger (lā yaḥṭimannakum Sulaymānu wa-junūduhu—"lest Solomon and his armies crush you").
In classical analysis, this warning is characterized by order rather than blind panic. The early eighth-century commentator Mujahid ibn Jabr (d. 722) observed that the call functions as a structured transmission: the ant pinpoints the necessary action and names the exact source of disruption approaching their territory. In Mafatih al-Ghayb, the twelfth-century scholar Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 1210) highlighted the internal discipline of the command. The ant specifies the precise shelter required—directing nestmates below ground into their established chambers—and connects that instruction directly to the physical threat of being trampled.
The call ends with a crucial qualification: wa-hum lā yashʿurūn—"while they do not perceive it." Al-Razi noted that this phrase establishes a sharp asymmetry of awareness. The ant detects the massive force drawing near, but recognizes that the advancing army is entirely unaware of the colony beneath their feet. Classical commentators, including Al-Qurtubi (d. 1273), noted that this insight gives the alarm its focused urgency. The message is not an undirected distress cry; it is an organized, informational alert designed to mobilize the underground network before an oblivious, external force passes overhead.
